Oysters & Relaxation

We woke up at 5am to get to Wineglass Bay Lookout by sunrise only to be thwarted by cloud! It was at least good exercise as we had to make the ascent in time to beat the sun 😂

Our morning experience was the oyster experience at the Freycinet Marine Farm. We were driven there and guided by Patrick once again. The group consisted of ourselves and another family of 4

...to adults! This one is giant, they are normally harvested an eaten at around 5-6cm

Back at the resort, there was just enough time to squeeze in a quick lunch before a massage

We both had different ideas of relaxation. A cozy spot to read with dessert and coffee for me, golf for Mal

Kayaks, Bees and Golf

We were literally on the go the whole day today. Being on the move helped somewhat to fit more food in but only just...

Even the fresh juices were fancy. I chose watermelon and roseberry, Mal chose beetroot and ginger


His favourite breakfast Mal declares. Poached eggs and avocado on toast with pistachio dukkha and mango. Big call!

Perhaps foolish, I chose the ramen. It was alright without being great.

Kayaking and birdwatching was again only with 4 guests

I know I said I would minimise my food posts...but lunch was so fabulous I had to include the photos! Octopus, chorizo and saffron

We literally had just enough time to freshen up post kayak and have lunch before it was time to go to a bee and honey experience. The apiarist Rob was hilarious with awful bee jokes

One of us is not fond of bees and the other petrified of flying insects...but we donned our bee suits! It was included, and definitely blog worthy!

So the man who does not like flying insects was chosen to smoke the bees 😂. The anaesthetist was disappointed to discover that the gas does not send the bees to sleep or make them drowsy. It just hides the warning scent produced by the guard bees.

He found a queen bee for us. Can you spot her? Hint - she's the floozy who has a huge abdomen filled with the "genetic code" of  many, many male bees.

A Tasmanian Devil decided to make an appearance!

At the end of the bee tour was honey tasting! Complete with Tasmanian apple ciders, or other drink of choice. Our shoes which were left back at the resort had also magically appeared spaced out ready for us to derobe

accompanied by cheeses, apples and crackers from the kitchen. The honey even made blue cheese taste good(ish)

As soon as we were done with honeys and bees, we were off to golf. The resort had organised our car to be at reception for us complete with golf clubs loaded and green fees sorted out. Too easy!

By this of day, the serious golfers had left and we had the whole course to ourselves. It made for a very quick 9 holes of golf

We came back to get showered and dressed for dinner to find afternoon tea in our room which we didn't have time to eat!!!

Saffire Freycinet

Saffire Freycinet - the view from our room

I'm rather tired of Covid-19 updates...but it seemed like a necessity for every trip! In brief, the Eastern states of Australia are seemingly past the peak of the Omicron wave, and the states have finally sensibly dropped all testing for interstate travel. After Malcolm getting Covid 2 weeks ago, we safely navigated through the multitudes of rapid antigen testing for school and work and thankfully were able to actually fly to Tasmania!

This trip was in lieu of going to an all-inclusive resort on the Chilean Lakes with another couple for our 20th wedding anniversary. Everyone knows the cancellation story well by now! Saffire Freycinet seemed like a great substitute. It was one of the few truly all-inclusive high end resorts in Australia. We initially had our doubts, as it was very expensive. Although we know food would be excellent (we are in Tassie!), we were worried about the level of service in Australia compared to properties in Africa, Asia and South America.

To our delight, we are able to report that so far we have been thoroughly impressed. The staff have been friendly, and attentive without being snobby or in your face. There was a touch of personalisation which even we appreciated (we usually like doing our own thing...) including being contacted pre-trip to discuss what we hoped to get out of our trip, organising an itinerary for our time here, and the staff remembering our names. This started at the Saffire Airport lounge, and everything was seemless from there. For once, everyone at the resort was on the same page. 

We won't bore you too much with too many words. We are not ashamed to admit that we wanted to get maximum value for the money for our 3 night stay...so we have signed up for as many complimentary guided excursions as we could! Even then, there are some that we just couldn't fit in. We will post updates with comments on photos from here on!

One last thing...you definitely will never be hungry here!!

We really didn't need a lounge after only a 2 hour flight from Sydney to Hobart but it was a nice option. And yes we really did bring that much for a 3 night trip...

The view upon entering the resort lobby. There must have been cameras at the gate or the driveway, as Hamish, the staff who had been corresponding with us over email, was waiting for us right at the entrance. Our car was parked for us, and our luggage taken to our room.

By the time we arrived at Saffire, it was 1:15pm. Hamish knew that we planned to have lunch at the resort (passed on from Donna at the airport) so the welcome was brief. He gave us a brief tour and rundown (including our itinerary) and directed us to lunch so we could make our first excursion at 2:30pm! This was my appetiser size seafood mezze plate!

Our "itinerary" for our stay

Our winetasting excursion was with only 4 guests, with Patrick our guide/driver from the resort. Started with a chardonnay as we walked around the vineyard with the owner

The wine tasting/pairing was so relaxed and enjoyable, even for a low alcohol consumer like myself! It was nice to chat to the owner about his family, his home, and life in general

My drink of choice was Ice Ice Baby! Cocktail of the day!

Dinner was a choice from either a 5 course degustation which changed daily or the "standard" a la carte which remain constant. The degustation came with wine pairing, which can be upgraded with a fee to a "premium" wine pairing. Pictured above is the amuse bouche of kingfish with figs. It really was good...

Just for the first night, we'll include the dishes to highlight the quality. Sashimi scallops. Simply superb, one of the best scallop dishes we've had.

Freycinet mussels. Good but the least "wow" from tonight's offering

Mooloolaba king prawns with sweet potato noodles. Amazing!

5 spice duck. Perfectly cooked, but strong flavours and this may be off-putting for some. We loved it!

Dessert. By this time, we were VERY full...
