Milan Mini Detour

Lake Maggiore

And just like that it was time to say goodbye to Greece. We didn't want to risk missing our long haul flight home from Milan, and so flying the trusty Ryanair we left Greece one day earlier. We needn't have worried, other than witnessing about 20 people having to pay for either not checking in before hand or not keeping to luggage requirements, the flight was uneventful and even landed 35 minutes early. It only took 20 minutes to get out of Milan Malpensa airport and we hopped on to the free shuttle to the Hilton Garden Inn.

After dumping our bags, we decided to adventure our way to Arona at Lake Maggiore. We wanted a taste of the area whilst it was still warm! The train station looked deserted but we were helped by a very friendly train master. Between our collective broken English and Italian, we got the information we needed. He even wrote down all the times of the trains that departed from Arona to get us back. In 20 minutes we were at Arona. We didn't do much other than stroll, eat gelato and munch on pizza by the lake, but it was a nice stop before flying home

The blog will end here as tomorrow is purely a travel day. A few random thoughts...this has been our shortest trip to Europe. It almost felt abrupt to have to go home! It was also an experience travelling as a party of 3, rather than the minimum 5 or more commonly 7 or 9. Whilst we enjoyed the convenience and ease of travel, we definitely missed the comradery of our travel mates, and being able to share moments with the whole family. Jonah definitely missed his siblings. Fortunately for us, our next family trip is not too far away staving off post holiday blues. Time to go home now to fund these trips!

Happy Birthday Jonah!

Happy Birthday Jonah! What better way to celebrate than to be on the island of Santorini!

Our experience with the islands of the Cyclades so far had been something akin to speed dating. Hello island. I only have one day island. Show me your best! I will then decide whether or not I like you island. Not the most economical to be doing private tours everywhere but definitely time efficient. Like on Mykonos and Naxos, we covered the highlights of Santorini with another exuberant driver. He gave us a very DETAILED history of the island, including those of the Phoenicians, Myceneans, Minoans, Greeks, Turks and seemingly everyone else in the region. We were worried that there would a quiz at the end! Malcolm did manage to stump him when he enquired if the 2 islands he could see were the "Breasts of Athena". At first, we were worried that this was something Angelo made up...but then soon realised that Malcolm got the wrong Goddess. The twin island "breasts" that he was referring to belonged to Aphrodite, not Athena.

Good morning Santorini!

The second half of the day was devoted to the water. Sadly, the winds were particularly strong today so we avoided the caldera. However, it didn't detract too much from our sailing excursion, the waters where we anchored was calm and the water absolutely beautiful. The winds created a natural (and erratic) pseudo air-conditioning system. It was hot under the sun when it was shining, then you get a cold reprieve when the winds blew clouds across the sun. Overall, it was warm enough to be in the water! Our catamaran was nowhere near as big or flash as some of the other yachts and boats we saw, but what we had was a lovely husband and wife team who provided great conversation and home style cooking (instead of a BBQ). As Eli was from the mountains of mainland Greece, the food was good! Nothing was pre-prepared, it was all cooked onboard. From the sailors, we got a geography lesson on Santorini. We definitely ended the day very informed! Let us see how long it lasts...

So...was Santorini worth the hype? Mal's sentiments pretty much summed it up so I'll plagiarise and insert his response.

"Yes! It is beautiful, but busy. A population of 22,000 takes in up to 17 cruise ships per day (25,000 people) - a friend for everybody!

The solution: if you are going to spend the time and money to come here, pay the little extra to avoid the barbarians. From the right villa there is no need to fight for a good photo spot or restaurant.. Just enjoy the cool breeze, the warm sun, a good book and a glass of whatever takes your fancy."

Out of the three Cyclades Islands we visited, we liked Mykonos the least. Santorini was the most beautiful and Naxos had the most character and enjoyability that was not luxury related. Mykonos won't be getting a second date but we will leave Naxos and Santorini our number.

Santorini

The iconic Santorini blue domes

We've saved the best til last. Or rather...we've saved the most expensive til last! The island of Santorini (or technically Thira) was the last of the Cycladic Islands on our hit list and our last destination in Greece. As expected, the ferry was late and the disembarkation another round of organised chaos. This was where most of the ferry emptied and the port was like a fish market of drivers and guides waving their boards around looking for their customers. Fortunately we found our driver quickly and he had parked his car right near the exit so we didn't have to wait for other cars or buses to move.

Our hotel in Oia, Art Maisons Aspaki, was chosen by Jonah and we agreed to it as part of his birthday celebration. We booked nearly a year in advance when there was a special on and when revenge travel had not really taken off yet. Little did we know then how good a deal it was. The rates were now 40% more! We all love a good bargain! Our driver called the hotel just before arrival, and 2 porters were waiting for us at the carpark that was chock a block with cars, vans and buses. The rest of the trip would be made on foot. We soon understood why the porters were needed...they pushed their way through the crowds with our suitcases, including past the instagrammers lining up for the famous blue dome shot, and then down the steep stairs.

We were welcomed with a lovely drink, checked in and was soon able to enjoy our villa for the rest of the day. The hotel and our villa was beautiful, had one of the best positions in Oia, and was staffed with the most helpful and friendly staff. We had dinner onsite and it was so relaxing...but freezing once the sun went down! Fortunately they had blankets for us but we still didn't stick around for tea or coffee!
I won't write too much more as we didn't do too much more other than relax!
