Treviso

Our day commenced with the pleasant surprise of an Italian train running to schedule! We continued our whirlwind exploration of Northern Italy with a day trip to Treviso. Treviso was known for many things but first on our list was to see the "Fountain of Tits". The Fontana Delle Tette was built in the 1500s and once a year when a new mayor was elected, there was free celebratory wine. For 3 days, red wine would flow from one nipple and white wine from the other. Sadly the current fountain was built in 1989, with the broken pieces of the original (destroyed by Napoleon's soldiers) safely housed elsewhere. To be honest it looked a bit sad and out of place in a nook of an obscure alleyway but it made for a good story and had the kids interested!

We learnt during our cooking class that the recipe for tiramisu had changed over the years. The original recipe used marsala and had more sugar, the more modern recipes were generally lighter and less sweet. Well tiramisu was born in Treviso so how could we not eat some whilst here. The vote from the family was split, with the children preferring the OG (the teen word for original) and the adults leaning towards the lighter, modern take. 

Treviso was small and easy to explore on foot. The medieval city centre is pretty but unfortunately had the occasional jarring modern building visible or attached to an old one. It really was a shame as there were so many gorgeous porticoes and frescoed buildings and archways, in addition to the pretty canals (Treviso also known as little Venice). Was it worth coming? Most definitely, but you probably can do it all in half a day.

Our attempt at a healthier lunch

We made our way back towards Venice Mestre and hopped on the bus to. This was when the mishaps started...1. We missed our stop by 4kms 2. In our attempt to make instant noodles in our room, we set off some sort of alarm 3. In the subsequent attempt to air the room, we nearly broke the door 4. In the ensuing panic, my noodles were prepared incorrectly and became inedible. 

Here's to hoping tomorrow's daytrip has a better ending!
