Seal Rocks & Coffs Harbour

The weather had definitely turned. Gone were the sunny blue skies, replaced with a ferocious wind and heavy cloud cover. The predicted rains though had not yet arrived, so we took the most of the opportunity and headed to the remote Seal Rocks on our way north to Coffs Harbour.

Seal Rocks is a good 30 minutes off the main highway but once there, the access to beach is easy and the walk to the Sugarloaf Lighthouse is short. There is an additional short steep climb of 100m to the highest point where one will be rewarded with spectacular views. The weather made the scenery even more dramatic. The seals though were unfortunately not present today. Once abundant in the are, they were poached and now only appear periodically.

Fancy staying here?! The lighthouse cottages are available for holiday rental...

That is why the lighthouse is needed...

A brief stop was made at Hungry Jack's for lunch before we continued our drive. By now, it was raining steadily. We made it to Aanuka Beach Resort by 4:30pm. It was the best of the available accomodation that alllowed a full refund at the time of booking. It was passable...but would I recommend it?! Probably not...There was not anything overtly wrong with it. Everything was just...ok. The reception and buildings were dated, wifi-slow and restaurant expensive. On the plus side, the facilities were decent, and the beach that is within easy access is nice. I should insert a disclaimer here that we are rather fussy with our accomodation. Whilst I have no objections to stay at a basic place, I do expect the price to reflect accordingly.

We chanced upon American Pickers on TV whilst waiting for our dinner reservation. It was like an bizarre American version of Antiques Roadshow. We were glued to the screen needing to find out exactly what we were watching...

Dinner at the resort restaurant was actually quite nice, albeit expensive as mentioned above. Both families had an ACCOR card and thus we had a discount for the food at the restaurant. Accor had a rather complex system of discounts where you get 50% off with 2 diners, and the discount progressively decreases as the number of diners increase. Here we chanced upon an accident where we received 50% discount...happy day!!! That $42 eye fillet suddenly tasted that much better! We finished our day with a cardio sprint across the sprawled resort back to our villa, and contemplated what we were to do with a forcast of rain for at least the next 5 days...sigh
