Time To Call It A Day

So many things to do...so little time! There was no rest for the wicked. We grabbed breakfast at a local bakery and set out for Huntley berry farm for some fruit picking fun! Unfortunately, we were right at the end of the berry picking season for the area, but we still had fun picking fruit and vegetables. So much so that we nearly forgot to head to lunch!

Lunch was at Sister's Rock Restaurant, a restaurant perched high on a hill with the most incredible views! We had been blessed with such good weather, and we relished our last meal together in the sunshine. The food, again was amazing, and it was a great way to end our road trip. We will wait and watch to see how this seemingly never ending pandemic will evolve over time. Fingers crossed for another exciting Walkin' Womens adventure next year! Hopefully overseas...

Orange

It was time to move on to Orange. However, before we farewelled Mudgee, we had another foodie stop to make! The locals recommended coffee at the "dero" (Aussie slang for derelict) house. It doesn't have a name and the owners come and start when it suits them. Unfortunately for Serena, our resident coffee lover, the "country" time meant that we couldn't try the "best" coffee in town. We had to be content with trying the baked goods from "Mudgee Sourdough", conveniently sold at the same location. 

We ate our breakfast by the riverfront before commencing our two hour plus drive to Orange. We had to keep to time because we had another restaurant reservation to get to! 

We woke up early to "rope-drop" the coffee shop! Unfortunately the owner had not turned up yet :( By the time we left, the lines were long...

Charred was another highly rated and popular restaurant in the region. Their dinner bookings had become so booked out that they started to offer the same degustation menu at lunch. We managed to snag one of these. We really didn't know what to expect...we just wanted to say we have tried the "in" restaurants! It turned out to be probably the stand out restaurant of our trip! (This was a big call as we had many outstanding meals). We were so full after our meal we couldn't eat dessert...


It would be advisable to book a table at least 3-4 weeks in advance if you wish to dine on the weekend.

By this stage, it felt like we were moving from one food spot to another. Unfortunately that pattern continued! We wandered through the town of Orange, looking for Racine Bakery, followed by purchases of cured meats from the local deli. We briefly checked into our hotel for the night, dumped our bags, and headed straight for Swinging Bridge Wines where we had a booked time slot for a tasting. It seemed like the old way of "rock up and taste wine" is no longer. We saw many people turned away with no reservations. Wine tasting had also become DYI with "placemats" placed in front of you bearing descriptions of the wines to be poured and the wines placed on the designated spot with the appropriate description. We managed to leave with a box full of alchol between the group. At this point, we were grateful that we travelled in an SUV with plenty of space!

Dinner was at the local Japanese, Raku Izakaya. Sadly, this was our only disappointing meal. It came with good reviews both online and from friends who've been. The food was ok but the service sadly was woeful. So much so that it made it difficult to enjoy the meal. To avoid myself getting upset again...in short, half our table was served 45 minutes before the other half. Our attempts to bring this to the attention of the staff was met with some of the most rude service, and absurd replies any of us had encountered. Oh well! Can't win them all!

More Mudgee...plus Gulgong

Our choice of sunrise activity today was The Drip, a relatively easy 3km round trip about 30 minutes out of Mudgee. We were initially somewhat perplexed by the wide ranging times reported by various sources, and soon discovered the pace would be determined by how many times you stop to take photos. There was plenty to take photos of and so our trip out to The Drip was double the time of our trip back to the carpark. As it was early on a Friday morning, we encountered only 1 family on our walk along the cliff face and river. It was just glorious! As a reference for future would be visitors, we took 1.5 hours with a member of party having recently recovered from a bad ankle sprain as well as ample time for photos as already mentioned above.

Hands On Rock was an aboriginal heritage site about a 5 minute drive from The Drip. The walk is relatively short but there was a short moderately steep incline to get to the sandstone cave with hand "prints" stencilled onto the rockface.

We returned to Mudgee for brunch or essentially lunch as it was 1130 by the time we finally ate! We were desperate for caffeine and sustenance. Alby & Esther's was our choice for the morning, a cafe/wine bar tucked away off a laneway from Market St. Due to Covid-19, reservations were only taken from 12pm and the wine bar was closed. Whilst the setting was charming, they were very busy. It did take some time for us to be served. The menu choices for me personally was a little disappointing and limited. There wasn't really anything that I felt like eating. It took me a while to decide what I wanted to order and for those who know me, you'd know how unusual that was...Having said that, the food that we ordered were fresh and tasty. Would I go there again? Definitely but with so many other cafes around, I'd probably try others first.

Cheese tasting was conveniently available right next to our resort. Much produce were purchased and the trend continued at Honey Haven. The "tastings" at Honey Haven included raw honeycomb, honey and pollen, honey softdrink, honey based scrubs and moisturisers, and much more! The lady serving us mentioned that the whole gamut wasn't always possible when they were busy on the weekends. Score! We rewarded her friendliness with armfuls of produce. Who could resist honey spiced mead?! 

We finished off our afternoon with a drive to the historic gold rush town of Gulgong. It was nearly dropped as we had so many places to visit but we were glad we visited. It was more quaint and prettier than expected. Photos don't do justice to the charm of the town.

Our treat for the evening was dining at The Zin House, a restaurant focused on local produce with its own garden set in the sprawling hillside Lowe Family Wine Estate. Reservations are hard to come by and so when there was an opening 3 weeks out from our trip, took it! And we were so glad we did because after that, there was no availability until August!

The "long" degustation dining concept was a great but for us Asian's maybe a touch too long lol. Can't please us lah...The food though, did live up to the hype. The ambience was also relaxed and comfortable with the restaurant only having one sitting per table. The service was warm and friendly. It was a great way to celebrate our combined birthdays and to end the day!
